Boring Bass Lines

Where You Come From Matters

Over 40 years behind the bass. More than 25 years as a professional. A journey shaped by gospel, driven by groove, and defined by authenticity.

The Journey

With over 40 years behind the bass and more than 25 years as a professional, my journey has been shaped by one defining truth: where you come from matters. My early years were rooted in Black Gospel music, and that foundation has followed me through every stage, every studio session, and every note I've played since.

I paid my dues on the Top 40 circuit like so many musicians do — learning the discipline, the professionalism, and the grind. But eventually, I made a choice: play what I love, or keep chasing the gig. I chose the former. These days, I focus on blues, funk, R&B, and jazz — the music that feeds my soul and lets me bring something real to the stage. For the past three years, I've been playing and touring with blues artist Zac Harmon. He keeps a conservative calendar — a few international tours per year, the occasional blues cruise, and one or two local performances per month. It's the perfect setup for me and my bandmates, most of whom split time between music and the corporate world. The rest of the time, I work as a contract bass player, handling everything from three-piece restaurant gigs to nine-piece bands for corporate events to stadium performances for gospel festivals. Lots of variety. Never boring.

The Sound

There's something people notice about my playing — something they've mentioned my entire career. It's hard to put into words, but you can hear it. The pocket, the feel, the tone — it all comes from those formative years in the church. That Black Gospel foundation gave me a sound that's identifiable and unmistakable. It's my edge, and it's what makes my playing stand out. You can always tell the difference between someone who was raised playing in church and someone who wasn't. That difference is real, and it runs deep.

The Influences

Early on, I was obsessed with the gospel greats — players like Abe Laboriel, Tommy Brown, Joel Smith, and Maurize Fitzgerald. They showed me what was possible. As I grew, I dove into the jazz and funk giants: Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius. I spent years studying their technique, their approach, their voice on the instrument.

But somewhere along the way, my focus shifted. I'm always going to respect great players, but I realized the real magic happens in the chemistry of the band. These days, I'm drawn to groups like Snarky Puppy, Ghost Note, and Cory Wong — ensembles where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. That's where the music lives.
